That stall is not laziness. It is the gap between saying a fact and using multiplication as a structure. STAAR Category 2 (Computations and Algebraic Relationships) leans hard on that second skill. Kids who can recite some products still freeze when the item asks them to match an array to an equation, choose a strip diagram for a two-step story, or decide whether a related division fact even belongs in the model.

TEKS 3.5B is representing and solving one- and two-step multiplication and division problems within 100 using pictorial models (including strip diagrams) and equations. This is where Category 2 gets spicy. The story is longer. The model has to match. The equation has to match the model. One wrong part label, and the whole answer drifts.

Those three standards travel together in September. Fact fluency without arrays stays fragile. Arrays without equations stay pretty. Equations without strip diagrams stay abstract. A good practice block hits all three in the same sitting.

Classroom pitfalls that look like “they know their facts”

Facts-only fluency that never transfers. Timed sheets can help retrieval, but they do not teach kids to see multiplication in a problem. Keep the setup light enough for a Tuesday math block.

  1. Present mode on the board (or shared screen). One scene at a time. No scavenger chaos if your room is not built for it.
  2. Pairs or trios with a clear talk job. “Point to the array / strip / equation that matches. Defend it in one sentence.”
  3. Answer chips that build a code. Correct choices unlock colored chips or clue pieces. Wrong choices do not shame — they route to a hint that pushes kids back to the model.
  4. Self-checking with hints. Students should be able to recover without you narrating every distractor. Your job becomes circulating for the sticky misconceptions: part/whole swaps, array row/column confusion, related-division blind spots.
  5. A printable recording sheet. Even when the game is digital, pencil work keeps the strip diagram honest. Kids write the equation that matches the picture before they claim the chip.
